Treebeard were formed by Haze & World Turtle brothers Chris & Paul McMahon plus Paul Chisnell (Haze, Three Legged Cat, Old Pekuliar), Gordon Walker (Ant Hill Mob & guest on World Turtle's 'Wilderness of Eden') and Chris Jellis (Old Pekuliar).
The band play Haze & World Turtle originals as well as a selection of rock, pop, folk (& even country!) songs in their own inimitable way.
Originally called Acoustic Haze, the band changed their name to Treebeard, after the character in Lord of the Rings, to avoid confusion with Haze.
The band describe their style as 'Heavy Wood', a concept stolen from the Nottingham 80's duo Twice Bitten, who supported
Haze as well as many of the other progressive rock bands, playing their own distinct style of electric/acoustic music.
They play original compositions as well as a selection of rock, pop, folk
(& even country!) songs & tunes on a variety of acoustic instruments,
including “The Ace of Spades” on fiddle & accordion, and Russian &
Croatian tunes on giant balalaikas. In 2006 the band were joined by Ceri Ashton (of The
Outlandish Knights & Hiraeth). They are regulars on the beer festival circuit, playing Sheffield, Derby,
Tamworth, Newark, Stockport, Lincoln, Stoke & Barnsley festivals, as well as
performing at Earls Court for the Great British Beer Festival, and at the
Cropredy fringe in 2008. Original guitarist Chris Jellis left the band in early
2009. They describe their style as 'Heavy Wood', and have just released their second CD 'Reel Ale’ on Gabadon Records in April 2010.
Their track ‘Train’ is featured on the ‘Forged in Sheffield’ folk
compilation CD.
